MinistryFair

MinistryFair

Sunday, September 21, 2008. It’s more than just a great corn dog! If you don’t know what we’re referring to, you must come check it out. Each fall, the Congregational Care and Hospitality committees host a ministry fair for ALL (new members or lifelong, young or old) to spread the word about opportunities to get involved with Blacknall ministries. During the Sunday School hour and after the second service, booths will be set up in the fellowship hall with a display of many ways that you can be involved at Blacknall. Representatives at the booths will share the most up to date information and sign up opportunities for the coming year. The booths will also be stocked with goodies to energize you as embrace the many booths that are a part of the fair. (And yes, we will have corn dogs too! It is a fair, after all!) Since the upcoming Presidential Election and 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games make this such a unique “banner” year, the theme of the 2008 Ministry Fair is, “His Banner Over Me is Love” (Song of Solomon 2:4).

New Monasticism

September 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We’re very excited to start a new series for the fall semester. We’ll be talking about the recent monastic movements, using a book titled “New Monasticism: What it has to say to today’s church”. Chris Rice introduced the series this morning with an overview and some comments on his experiences in the Antioch intentional community; next week, the book’s author, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, will continue leading the discussion. He will be bringing copies of the book ($10).

Announcing TableTalk

             Sept 24 – November 19
Dinner at 5:30, Classes at 6:30 (except Habakkuk at 6 p.m)

Blacknall’s Wednesday night fellowship is back, bringing an evening of
fellowship, fun, and learning to your week! Join us this fall for 9 weeks of
delicious dinner and classes led by some of Blacknall’s very gifted
teachers. TableTalk is a program for the whole family, not just adults. Each
class reflects a focus on missional living in the church and will be
interactive, practical, and biblically grounded. Middle and high school
youth are encouraged to participate in all classes. There is one class
specifically for elementary aged children, and nursery care will be
available for children 4 years and under.**

Registration will begin on August 24 in the lower atrium, and the deadline
to register is September 14. Questions? Contact Dave Dunderdale
or Karl Umble (see brochure for details).

Classes

Young Missionaries

This will be an experiential journey for our children, from kindergarten to
fifth grade, into the heart of missions. Each week we will be visited by an
“everyday missionary,” a person in our congregation and community whose life
reflects a commitment to serve God daily. Through singing, scripture, and
stories, our children will discover and affirm their own calling to be young
missionaries in their schools, neighborhoods, and families.

Responding to Stories of Jesus
Leaders: Beth Solie & Traci Hoover

This fall we invite you to come and play with God. We will gather to
worship, to be still, and to hear God speak to us through His word presented
in a fresh and exciting way. If you had the time and space to be still and
listen, I wonder how you might respond? Come and find out!

The Missional Church
Leaders: Dave Dunderdale, Amanda Diekman & Chris Rice

As a community, Blacknall exists to “give itself away, for the life of the
world.” We will explore this calling to be a missional church by discussing
the biblical calling to missions, the crises facing the world today, and
where God’s spirit is at work in healing the world. Together, we will move
actively into following God through holistic missional lives and think about
how practices like suffering, lament, and hope help us to be disciples of
Christ before a watching world.

Not Your Parents’ Prayer Meeting!
Leaders: John Nicholson, Angie &Harold Hong

This group will meet each week not to talk about prayer but to pray. We will
use various methods of prayer to encourage our engagement in communal
prayer. We will use music and various other expressions of worship that will
remind us that prayer is essential to our being an “outpost of the Kingdom.”

Women’s Bible Study: Habakkuk
           Coordinator: Kirsten Burkart
           Time: 6-7:30pm

An evening women’s bible study on Habakkuk will be held on Wednesday nights
at the church this fall. Following a short time of worship, participants
will gather for facilitated small group discussions based on provided study
questions. Please note that this class has a separate registration
process. To register, contact Kirsten Burkart by August 31 (see brochure for details).

Living Philippians
Leaders: Andy Rowell & Tim Wardle

The goal of this class is to become better disciples of Jesus Christ through
a study of the book of Philippians. In our discussion, we will seek to
understand Paul’s vision for the Philippians and their new life in Christ,
why he is so insistent on certain aspects of the Christian life, such as
humility, righteous living, and expectant hope, and how this might/should
impact our individual and communal life as a church today.

Marriage
           Leaders: Steve Hinkle & others

This class will focus on biblical perspectives on marriage and spend
considerable time on issues of forgiveness and intimacy in marriage. Both
singles and married people are welcomed to attend.

Small Groups

Small groups will be continuing to meet all fall. We are partnering with the
Small Group ministry in several ways:
1. Your small group can sign up for a class together as your small group
time for the fall.
2. Your small group can come and enjoy dinner and fellowship, and then use a
small room for private discussion.

Miscellaneous, Details

**Childcare will be available for both options. Contact Karl Umble if your
small group would like to reserve a small room to meet in during the
TableTalk class time.

*To register: *
Option 1: email or call Karl Umble and tell us (a) how many people will plan to attend and (b) what class(es) look most interesting to each person planning to attend (no obligation, but want general idea)

Option 2: the brochure will be out soon and you can hand in the Form we
will have on the brochure to the church office or to our sign-up table in
the lower atrium on Sunday mornings starting Aug 24.

Do we have to attend all weeks? No! Some of us travel or have other
conflicts. But we hope you’ll come as often as you can if you can!

Welcome!

June 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Welcome to the Blacknall PCF blog. We hope that this page will become a resource for the post-college fellowship at Blacknall. The PCF class meets at Blacknall at 10am in the community room. We also meet for social events (such as yesterday’s beach trip!) about once a month.

Today we started a four-week series on Emerging Adulthood taught by Chris Smith (see link for more details).

Emerging Adulthood

June 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Christian Smith, a distinguished professor of sociology formerly of UNC and

now at Notre Dame, will lead a four-week series in PCF on “emerging
adulthood” and its implications for Christian ministry and formation.
Emerging adulthood (also called “extended adolescence,” “youthhood,”
“adultolescence,” “young adulthood,” the “twenty-somethings”) is a term for
the life stage from roughly 18-30 when many people resist long-term
commitments like family and career and explore and keep their options open.
Anyway, I can’t explain it very well, but Chris wrote a fascinating article
in Books & Culture last fall:
http://www.christianitytoday.com/bc/2007/006/2.10.html

Regardless of whether you are in that stage of life, have been in that
stage, have friends or family members in that stage or will have children
who go through that stage, it is a relatively recent development in American
society that has important implications for Christian ministry.

–Mark Elliott

If you weren’t able to attend the first day of the series today, it should be easy to jump in at any time during the next four weeks. The reading in the link above will give you all the background you need.
